Charter School Gets Grant 10/9/05

Charter School Receives Start-Up Grant
The Chesapeake Public Charter School (CPSC) has taken another step toward a possible opening in the fall of 2006.
On Saturday, Oct. 1, the Maryland Department of Education announced that it has awarded a $50,000 grant to the Chesapeake Public Charter School Alliance, corporate name for the school.  “With the help of many volunteers,” said Kate Sullican, SPSC representative, “SPCS in now on track to begin classes in 2006.
CPCS representative Kate Sullivan says the school will use some of the grant money to hire a project coordinator to oversee curriculum development and Alliance fund-raising activities. The grant will also help CPSC purchase materials and books for the professional development of the Governing Board and staff. Some of the money will go to renovations of the charter school's proposed temporary home.
“The next 12 months will be busy ones,” according to the school's web site.  A team of CPSC volunteers will design the charter school's curriculum. The school will also canvas the community for donations of money, equipment, and volunteer assistance. This will include a marketing and public relations strategy to keep the community informed of the charter school's educational objectives.
CPCS will offer it students a modified school calendar, mixed-age placement in small class settings, and a curriculum focused on “Connections to Place.” The curriculum and institutional structure have been developed by a highly committed group of founders who bring extensive experience in Maryland's public elementary schools.
