Superintendent Candidates Announced

The Board of Education has announced the candidates for Superintendent. They are:
Dr. Donald Carlisle, Superintendent, Miller Place School District, NY. Dr Carlisle received his Doctor of Education from Nova Southeastern University, and has been a Postdoctoral Fellow at Harvard University.
Dr. John Cox, Assistant Superintendent of Instruction, Charles County Public Schools. Dr. Cox received his Doctor of Education at the University of Maryland.
Dr. Michael Martirano, Director of School Administration, Howard County Public Schools, MD. Dr. Martirano received his Doctor of Education from Nova Southeastern University.
Dr. Christine Johns, Baltimore County Public Schools, MD. Dr. Johns received his Doctor of Education from Harvard University.
Dr. Donald Carlisle is an experienced Superintendent. He has served as superintendent in New York and Maine. Prior to being appointed superintendent, he served as principal, assistant principal, and teacher in Texas and South Carolina. Dr. Carlisle has experience in rural, suburban, and urban school districts that range in size from 1150 to 200,000 students. Dr. Carlisle has continued to remain current in his own professional development with postgraduate work at Harvard University, as well as, teaching several graduate level administrative courses. Dr. Carlisle has been recognized for improving student achievement in several of his assignments.
Dr. John Cox is Assistant Superintendent of Instruction, Charles County Public Schools. He has served as a middle and high school principal, supervisor, coordinator, teacher and coach. He has experience in Charles County and Fairfax County, Virginia. Dr. Cox has been active in education at the state and local level; has been a member of numerous state and local task forces and committees; and has made presentations in Maryland and in other states. He has a record of building partnerships between the schools and businesses and community organizations. He is a lifelong resident of Southern Maryland and an active member of the Charles County Community.
Dr. Michael Martirano is Director of School Administration responsible for the supervision, management, and administration of 21 schools. He has been an elementary, middle, and high school principal in Prince George's and Montgomery Counties, Director, Down County Consortium - Montgomery County, a teacher specialist, and science teacher. Dr. Martirano has been recognized as Outstanding Educator for Prince George's County and Outstanding Science Teacher for Maryland by the Chemical Industry Council of Maryland. He has extensive publications and presentations and is a member of numerous professional organizations. He teaches at Johns Hopkins University.
Dr. Christine Johns is Deputy Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction with responsibility for providing executive leadership for all academic programs and support services. Before coming to Baltimore County, she was assistant superintendent in Pasadena, CA, principal, K-12 instructional specialist, magnet coordinator, and teacher in Prince George's County. Dr. Johns has made numerous presentations in Maryland and nationally. She has been a member of many advisory committees and workgroups including the Education Advisory Board, Johns Hopkins University and the Achievement Initiative for Maryland's Minority Students. She is the recipient of numerous fellowships, recognitions, and awards.
Nova Southeastern University is an on line study program which is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award bachelor's, master's, educational specialist, and doctoral degrees.
Dr. John Cox visited St. Mary's County for the Martin Luther King day celebration at St. Mary's College this February. During that visit, he explained how Charles County has been making improvements in the education gap between African Americans and other students.
